Podchef Island from the USA
Across the pond on the coast of the Pacific Northwest , in the San Juan archipelago, is tiny "Podchef" island. Neal "The Podchef" Foley lives, farms and cooks on a 34 acre corner of the island. 20 miles off the mainland, the island has a unique climate, character and individualistic group of inhabitants.
Due to its location, the island forces one to be as self-sufficient as possible. During the year dense fogs, gales and frequent power outages make life on the island a constant challenge. However, May to September make up for the other 8 months. With its azure skies, low rainfall and mild temperatures, summer on the island is a busy time of work and celebration.
When The Podchef isn't farming, he's either cooking local foods for island guests, or teaching workshops on sustainable agriculture and cookery. Neal plans to do a series of these films throughout the summer, so keep checking back to find out what's going on with The Podchef on his corner of the island. You can also find out more of what Neal, The Podchef, is up to at his website. There you can find out more about his cooking show, The Gastrocast, where he discusses food, farming and the politics of what we eat.
